2020 climate and energy package
The climate and energy package is a set of binding legislation which aims to ensure the European Union meets its ambitious climate and energy targets for 2020.
- A 20% reduction in EU greenhouse gas emissions from 1990 levels,
- Raising the share of EU energy consumption produced from renewable resources to 20% and
- A 20% improvement in the EU’s energy efficiency.
However technical implementation of the targets (including national targets arising from Decision 406/2009/EC) would not be possible without a revised monitoring mechanism (MMR) which aims to improve the quality of data reported, help the EU and Member States keep track of progress towards meeting their emission targets and also introduces some new elements such as among others, reporting of low-carbon development strategies and Member States adaptation to climate change.
